What is it like to work in a cafe?
Hello! I'm writing a book and am looking for some inside information for my central character who works in a cafe/ coffee shop. What is it like, for people who work there or go often? Music, tables, chairs, the wall color, etc. Do you have your own jargon/ special names for specific machines, people, or jobs? What are your favorite smells? What kind of pastries do you serve? Are they homemade or shipped there? Are there any specific cleaning procedures you must complete every night? Any and all information would be wonderful. Thanks!
Wow! That's a lot of info you're looking for in this forum! I owned a coffee house and the atmosphere was friendly...it was like Cheers without the alcohol! LOL! The Baristas loved their job...they served up coffee and great conversation! Unfortunately, there wasn't a lot of tipping involved, so I had to up their base pay.
Music was more of a lite venue...acoustic mostly, as the atmosphere was relaxing. I had a wood burning fireplace in there, so I put a living room grouping in front of it to make it cozy. Then there were regular tables & chairs set up around the conversation area. We did the majority of the food preparation there...but the smells from the kitchen usually didn't come into the main dining area as the place was big. They could smell my quiche when it was baking! *mmm* That usually sold out!
