glass tile, what kind of adhesive? hole in backer board how to fix before i tile? & tile over paint?
i am trying to tile kitchen back splash in an old house. after peeling off old peeling wall paper and removing the exhaust cover i find the backer board has glue on it, and the board has cup size hole in the top corner, the exhaust fan hole is huge almost the size of the cover. what can i do to remove the glue ( could i try nail polish remover) and what can i do about these holes in backer board? could i build up with joint tape and the adhesive or grout? i was thinking luon but the stuff at store seemed 1/4 think and that would bring wall out to the window casing. and make my surface uneven.**** Also my glass tile is net backed and every jar or pre mixed adhesive says not for glass but mine has the net and the guy at store says that it is fine, and i have non sanded grout Is IT OK to use these or will tile drop off wall??????
i think that you will have to use a mineral oil based paint thinner to clean up the glue perhaps.. make sure room is ventihlated good. or perhaps go to lowe's or home depot and ask the guys there in the paint department ( that is where all the glue type adhesives are kept) and ask them how to remove dried glue. might wind up having to scrape it off. fill in the holes for sure. if the wall is standard sheet rock, then try to cut the hole into a square going from stud to stud, get you the same sized sheet rock nail or screw it into the studs (for support) then use sheet rock mud (spakle otherwise known as) and properly mud sand mud sand till its straight then prime ( just for saftey sake then apply your mortar and press the net backs glass tiles into the or onto the wall. if the guy at the store (which in most cases they only hire people with exstensive knowledge of the area they work in) says that mortar would be ok, then im gu essing it would be ok. i once put a tile back splash in a house i was remodeling by just using mortar and then putting the tiles in place just like i would have done a floor. to this day they are still in place. i hop ethat i just helped you out. def. fill in the holes, as they will likely not be structuly sound in the strength of your black splash. and use mortar for the "glue" to adhere the tiles in place, then use the grout to fill inbetween the tiles like you would a rregular flooring.
