Colombo

Anyway, once you are in Colombo, there are a slew of attractions waiting to be discovered. Some of the most enticing crowd pullers are Dehiwala Zoo, Elephant Orphanage in Pinnewala, Dutch Period Museum, Fort Clock Tower, Gangaramaya Temple, Mt Lavinai Beach, and Independence Hall.
Kandy
Kandy, the country's last bastion of royalty, overflows with plenty of attractions. Kandy is also considered to be Sri Lanka's last proper city. Kandy has a mesmerising aura, which grows on the senses right from the moment one steps into the city. In fact, Kandy alone is well worth the money spent on buying one's tickets for flights to Colombo. Especially, Buddhist temples are a primary draw here. The Royal Botanical Garden, Lankatilaka temple, Gadaladeniya temple, and Embekke temples count amongst the major highlights. However, Kandy's show stealer is the complex of the old Royal Palace. Today, it has become the Holy Temple of the Tooth enshrining the holy tooth relic of the Buddha. This old royal capital is about a 3 hour drive from Colombo and during the travel, one gets to take in mesmerising views of Sri Lanka's rice fields and rubber plantations.
Nuwara Eliya
Beyond Kandy, one may take the mountains to reach Nuwara Eliya - the highest point in Sri Lanka located some 2,000 metres above sea level. Being the key Ceylon tea centre during the British Colonial era, Nuwara Eliya treats one to breathtaking views of verdant tea plantations. The Victorian architecture of the buildings and other remnants of the colonial era have been well preserved.
National Museum
The National Museum bombards one with magnificent glimpses of the rich cultural heritage of Sri Lanka. Some of the treasures adorning the museum are surviving rock sculptures rescued from ancient cities, thousands of archaic palm leaf manuscripts, a huge collection of rare volumes, paintings of long ago masters, antique demon face masks, weapons of Sri Lankan royalty, and fascinating bronze brassware. However, probably the most popular exhibit is the Kandyan King regalia.
Pettah Market
Anyone with a penchant for shopping should definitely check out Pettah, a leading bazaar precinct of Colombo. With its narrow cobbled roads clogged with street stalls and shops, Pettah proves to be paradise for bargain hunters. Every criss-cross lane joins the main street and has its own claim to fame. For instance, if Prince Street specialises in glass items and electronic gadgets, Keyzer Street is the place to be for household goods, while Malwatte Avenue seduces music aficionados with English, Sinhalese, and Tamil titles. In fact, Petta is a veritable treasure house for almost any item under the sun ranging from clothes and footwear to rare first edition books and personal accessories such as watches and semi precious stones.
