the novel was relatively new in the victorian era and so was immensely popular with anyone who could read. a typical theme of any victorian literature would be industry and development in the sciences; this was new and exciting for the era, and darwin for example, although he was a christian, proposed ideas about evolution in this time. inevitably, writer's attitudes to industry are reflected in their work, for example thomas hardy has a strong apparent disdain for industrial development and loss of tradition and rural countryside in many of his poems and his novel under the greenwood tree, for example. dr jekyll and my hyde by rl stevenson also reflects developments in science and what could happen.
religion was consequently a controversial topic too as many people had started to lose faith because of development in sciences.
class was an important issue to most people; you were born into a class and were expected to remain there for the rest of your life, and anyone who worked up the social ladder and earned more money by starting a business for example would be looked down upon by higher classes. this can be seen in almost any literature, dickens' a christmas carol for example.
the position of women is also important.. women were seen as lower than men and were not expected to leave the home.
