I've been a freshwater fisherman all my life, but recently decided to take on the ocean. To be perfectly honest, handling a boat is no trouble. Navigating? Whole other issue. From leaving the dock and making my way 10 or 12 miles out into the ocean I am sure there is all sorts of potential danger looming. In fresh water, there might be a random rock or shallow area that is very clearly marked but out in the deep blue sea there may be God knows what pop up on you at any second. From the green and red markers to basic things to look out for... can you offer up any advice? Thank you for your time.
For navigation, get a good set of paper charts to see the region. Now be sure to have a GPS/Chartplotter. That piece of equipment is the simplest basic piece of equipment to get you out and back. Especially if you don't want to take the time to actually learn navigation and seamanship.
Some of the dangers/hazards you are going to encounter are; Wind waves, Swells, Rouge Waves, debris such as logs, dead animals, bottles, lpg containers, cold waters, etc. Then you have to deal with possible motion sickness, tidal push, wind and ocean currents. Boating on a inland lake is NOTHING like boating on the ocean. I recommend you NOT start with venturing so far offshore. Start with may be a distance of 3 miles and learn that and become comfortable before going so far out.
You'll need to make sure to have these Safety items added if you don't have them. Signaling Flare kit (Mandatory USCG item for offshore), Offshore life vests (will be marked "Offshore"), and a VHF Radio.
