Will a better brush help me avoid bubbles in my polyurethane?
I'm having problems with bubbles in my Varathane oil-based polyurethane. I didn't shake the can. I've already tried soaking my brush in mineral spirits beforehand to get the air out, and also I thinned it 10% with mineral spirits on the second coat. But it has just as many bubbles as the first coat. Maybe it's my brush??? I'm using a $6 Shur-line varnish brush from Walmart. Would a better brush help resolve this issue? Do I need to thin it even more?
I'm going over oak which was stained with oil-based stain. I waited plenty of time between coats to be sure it was dry.
Also, how do you tell the difference between bubbles and dust nibs? I'm not 100% sure which problem I have. I thought my surface was clean, and I don't notice much dust floating around.
This is a large flat surface. 8 feet x 3 feet.
I like the camel hair too. even a cheap hog hair puts it on nice but leaves a hair once in a while.
I like to brush or stroke the same area several times working the bubbles and thickness out.
I usually see bubbles that are left in flow out. Your drying time may be a issue. I would not be applying in sunlight.
Did you stir? and stir what is semi solid on bottom.
and is this a fast dry product?

[edit] I was going to mention the foam brush too, but the details of your surface are not mentioned. Is it on the ornate side? If so a foam brush is difficult. And the one direction advice is very correct.
