I just got finished installing hardiboard/backerboard that is 1/4 inch. I installed it using the hardiboard screws. After installing the board, my brother told me I needed to remove the backerboard and put down a water barrier such as tar paper. Is this true? When I purchased the board from lowes, it said it was waterproof/rot resistant. I hope I don't have to take this stuff up.
your brothter is right, u still need to put a water barrier between the board and the subfloor to ensure water tightness of your floor. The board being water proof is only for the protection of the board but it will still take in water in the course of time. Membrane such as tar will prevent the water from coming in once the board get soaked up and penetrate your sub-floor.
