I just planted a Ivory Silk Lilac Tree ( Japanese Lilac tree) and would like info on taking care of it.?
I would like to know how often I should water it and other ways to keep it healthy? When do I prune it etc?
Syringa reticulata 'Ivory Silk'. Nice choice. This is a very low maintenance tree. It is tolerant of just about any soil and is very cold hardy as well. If you are just planting the tree you want to water the tree once a day by leaving a hose at the base of the root system and just letting it trickle there for 10-15 minutes. Doing this trains the trees root system to go deep for water. After the first couple weeks of doing this every day you can start to do it a couple times a week (more during the heat of the summer). Continue to water in this manner up until the ground freezes. Light pruning is best done after the tree flowers. Heavy pruning is best done when the tree is dormant. It doesn't require heavy fertilization (once a year is plenty).
