We have a sorta big strawberry patch and last year we didn't thin it out......?
now this year we have all kinds of grass growing in it as well as a few weeds. The plants are still growing and seem to be somewhat healthy. We have had a lot of rain this year(almost hit our record in Ohio) so I know I will not get a great crop this year. BUT my question is should I uproot everything and then dig out the grass and weeds? OR just try to get the grass and weeds up and TRY not to uproot any of the strawberry plants? Not only does the patch look awful but I know the plants would be much more fruitful without the grass and weeds taking their nutrients. Experienced opinions very much welcomed. Thanks
Strawberries should never be planted and left to run wild you end up with a mess like you have that is full of weeds you can't get out.
I grew them for years until it got too much for me. I had 2 beds. 1 for the runners or the present year plants and one for last years or the second year plants. I never kept them more than 2 years because by the third year production declines and you get the most berries off of second year plants. After berry production was over I dug out the older plants and prepared the bed for the runners in the spring. You should get enough runners off of the younger plants to replant but if you want you can leave all the runners and just prepare the center of the bed in the fall and do the rest in the spring. In spring I cut off all the runners and planted them in their bed. I work back and forth between the 2 beds so that 1 bed held the new plants from the runners and one held the second year plants
Then I mulched them with white pine needles. This kept the moisture around the plant, kept the berries from molding, kept down weeds and the needles made the berries sweeter.
Right now if you uproot everything you won't get any berries. Try clearing a bit on the outside of the patch and replanting some runners there. They are most likely runners on the outside anyway and there's probably fewer weeds there. Then replant those runners in a row. If you don't think that's enough then go all around the edge of the bed and leave a space so you can keep the weeds out of the new patch. After berry time mow off the center plants and till through it Then keep the weeds from growing by tilling often. In the spring take the runners and plant them in rows in the center. Then when you remove the perimeter ones you can just use the center rows.
