Why did my glass table top crack and break suddenly?
I have a glass top kitchen table. All of a sudden the table cracked and pieces of it fell to the floor. Then a few minutes later, the crack spread. I wonder why this happened. Nothing heavy was on the table. The only things there were a newspaper and 2 casserole pans that I took out of the oven a half hour earlier. Was it the heat from the pans? Why did this happen? Nothing like this ever happened to my table before.
It may have been the hot pans created stresses in the glass because the whole top was not heated evenly. The top may have been defective; it could have had internal stresses that were compounded by the hot pans. The weight of the casserole pans may have contributed to the cracking too. If you use the same kind of table in the future, put insulated pads or trivets under the hot cookware.
