Bonsai trees are a great hobby to take up. However it can be a bit confusing for people who don't know much about the subject. One such topic is that of pots. You will probably have heard that they are an essential part of the Bonsai creation process. They are indeed.
Pots are very important for creating the size of the Bonsai that you want. The bigger the pot, the bigger the roots and vice versa if you've got a smaller pot. A bigger root network means a bigger tree etc.
You might just shrug off the importance of a Bonsai pot as nothing more then a pot plant's pot. You might be interested in getting a plastic Bonsai Pot. Let's have a look at the pluses and the minuses of plastic Bonsai Pots.
First of all, the negatives. A Bonsai pot is an essential part of the displaying of the tree. A good pot adds to the image of the tree quite a bit you know. They don't take away from the tree... they further focus attention on the master work that you've created in that Bonsai.
And a plastic Bonsai pot is, well, a plastic Bonsai pot. It's plastic. Stamped out in some factory somewhere in the world. There are some fairly nice looking ones, however it doesn't make sense to me that people would want to associate something organic (like the Bonsai) with something that clearly isn't (in the case of the plastic Bonsai pot).
There are some advantages to getting a plastic pot I do concede. I like ceramic pots as do many others however they do have their disadvantages. If you live in a very cold part of the world you might find that ceramic becomes very brittle and can perhaps crack. You can buy ceramic pots that will not break however they will require a little more searching and usually aren't guaranteed.
A plastic Bonsai pot on the other hand is pretty much given not to break. It can happily live in all weather and all temperatures and be totally fine.
Whichever pot you choose to put your Bonsai tree in, it is your choice. I do not like the idea of a plastic pot; you may disagree. As I said you must choose the best pot for your circumstances.
However if it comes down to price - a cheap ceramic pot which might cost as much as an expensive plastic pot will look far nicer in the end. Always buy the best equipment for your tree as you can afford.
