Tealight candles?
Okay, for a science experiment, I'm burning tealight candles and testing various methods to try and make them burn for longer. But I'm just wondering, are you meant to keep the candle in the metal container it comes in or take it out? And what would you place the candle in? I mean, I suppose there are candle holders but i can't afford that many and they would have to be uniform because its a science experiment and all.
So would it be safe to just place the candle onto a table? Would the wax drip everywhere? Or would the table get damaged? Or would it be safe to just place a lot of candles on top a ceramic plate as I think that's non-flammable so it should be safe? And the tealight candles I bought said they were supposed to be used in conjunction with an oil lamp but I don't have one so yeahh..
I usually leave them in the metal; it holds all of the wax in so that my holder is clean and it's easy to remove afterwards. It will still burn outside of the metal, even if you don't put it in a holder, but wax will go everywhere.
My recommendation:
1. Put them on the ceramic plate. If the plate is oven-safe, you should be fine. Ceramic doesn't burn easily, and I don't think a tealight candle would pull it off. Don't put them directly on the table. The bottle of the candle will get hot and could scorch the table. Make sure that they are all level. All of the wax will melt while it is still burning; if the candle is tilted, some of the wax might pour out of the container.
2. Leave them in the metal container, or get a holder to burn them in. You can pick up cheap holders at a dollar store or a thrift store.
3. If you can't get a container for them and want to take them out of the metal, burn them directly on the plate or use a cup. You can get the wax off using hot water. Heat it from below the plate; this will melt the wax that is holding it to the plate, and you can remove the entire chunk in one big gob without melting the entire thing again.
4. About the oil lamp thing: Tealight candles are generally used for things like fondue pots (chocolate, at least) or in tea warmers. They don't have to be burned in those settings, however. I haven't heard of any specifically labeled as needing an oil lamp.
