Why have orchids captured the hearts and minds of so many flower lovers worldwide? Here's some very interesting information about orchids that'll help us understand their alluring nature:
Orchids Are Beautiful
First, and foremost, orchids are naturally beautiful. I don't think you'll find anyone that will dispute this. They capture the attention of men and women alike all around the world.
Orchids are easy to recognize; they typically have three petals; two similar and the other resembling a lip.
Their color is vibrant. They can be found in almost all colors, include red, blue, yellow and white.
Orchids Are Symbolic
Over the years they have become symbolic of not only beauty, but also of power, love and opulence.
Some species have even been named after celebrities and famous historical figures such as United States presidents (George Bush) and First Ladies, Filipino Presidents (Aranthera Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo), and U.S. Generals (Cattleya General Patton - it was originally named Cattleya Joseph Stalin but was later changed after his crimes against humanity became known).
Some orchids have also been named to commemorate special occasions such as Dendrobium Masako Kotaishi Hidenka, in honor of the royal wedding of Prince Naruhito and Princess Masako of Japan.
22 days after the death of Princess Diana in 1997, an orchid was planted in Singapore and named Dendrobium Memoria Princess Diana.
Orchids Are Resilient
One of the main attractions of the orchid is its ease of care. Except for the driest deserts and Antarctica, they can be found in literally all parts of the world.
Orchids can survive in a number of different habitats. Some enjoy full exposure to the sun while others thrive in the shade. Some live in trees while others prefer the ground or even rocks.
Because they only need to be watered, on average, about every 4 days, they are very low maintenance. In fact, orchids prefer to grow naturally on sloping surfaces so that excess water can run off.
This is good news to the avid gardeners out there that don't have a greenhouse... in the case of orchids, you don't need one!
Variety
Because of their wide variety, there is so much to learn about them if you want to grow and breed different types of orchids.
Worldwide, there are over 20,000 naturally occurring species of orchids and hundreds of thousands of breeds.
The most common types of orchids are Cattleya (also known as the Corsage Orchid), Phalaenopsis (also known as the Moth Orchid), Paphiopedilums (also known as Lady Slippers), Cymbidium, Dendrobium, Oncidiums (also known as Dancing Slippers) and Vanda.
Orchids Bloom Longer
The Phalaenopsis and Cymbidium orchids will remain in bloom for up to 4 months and some orchids bloom throughout the whole year!
They Can Be Expensive
The most expensive orchid ever sold fetched an amazing US$202,000! Fortunately, you and I will never need to pay that much for an orchid.
While they can cost more, on average, than most other popular house plants, there aren't many plants that will give you beautiful blooms for many weeks of the year.
